Welders in Ghana should be commended for displaying skills in welding and fabrication. Burglar proof doors and windows, steel containers, repair of trucks and trailers etc, have been performed by our indigenous welders and are evident in any part of our country. Most of these artisans train and use locally made transformer welding machines immersed in oil and used solely for Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) popularly called stick welding.
The more refined ones come from welder training institutions such as the Technical Training Institutes, Polytechnics, OIC, GRATIS, NVTI, ATTC, and privately owned institutions. These artisans graduate with such qualifications as Intermediate, Advance, Diploma, Testimonial etc. Over the years hundreds of such welders have been employed in both the formal and informal welding sector. Over the last decade or so, an apparent gap between the employer and the welder has existed due to new demands of the welding industry.
For example additional processes apart from SMAW/STICK are being employed in industry - Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW/MIG), Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW/TIG), Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW) are being employed in industry to enhance productivity and make welding cost effective. A typical employment request for a welder in a ship repair industry runs as follows: Application is invited from suitably qualified professional welders with 3G&4G, 2G&5G or 6G qualification using SMAW and capable of passing ASME IX welder qualification test in positions above. Welders should be able to interpret welding symbols and work independently with little supervision.
Qualification in other processes is an advantage. Response to this advert runs as follows: I am a 35 year old professional welder with 10years industrial welding experience. I have made repair works on crushing equipment, built storage tanks and pipe works. I have also participated in heavy duty equipment repair and can even operate same. I hold a Grade One NVTI certificate in Welding obtained from High Level Technical Institute. I am a fast learner and prepared to work according to your directives. CONFLICT? Yes.
The apparent conflict is on the interpretation of 6G using SMAW, and qualifying to ASME IX code. The welder certificates obtained in Ghana are the NVTI Grade One, and the GES Advance welding certificate which do not indicate the level of skill, position, or base metal thickness qualified in as opposed to entry level welder requirement of welding in all positions using SMAW on 3/8” or 10mm carbon steel plate. Industry performs welding based on Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) which is described as ff: A WPS is a document that describes how welding is to be carried out in production. Its purpose is to aid the planning and quality control of the welding operation.
They are recommended for all welding operations and most application codes and standards make them mandatory. Welders must be qualified in the procedure outlined in the WPS by performing to the WPS specification (PQR) or by testing (WPQR) What is Procedure Qualification Record (PQR)? A PQR is required when it is necessary to demonstrate that your company has the ability to produce welds possessing the correct mechanical and metallurgical properties. A welding procedure must be qualified in accordance with the requirements of an appropriate welding procedure standard, such as ASME Sec IX, as follows:
Weld a test piece in accordance with the requirements of your specification. The joint set up, welding and visual examination of the completed weld should be witnessed by a certified welding inspector such as an AWS certified CWI or an Inspection Body. The details of the test such as the welding current, pre-heat etc., must be recorded during the test.
Once the welding is complete the test piece must be subject to destructive and non destructive examination such as radiography and mechanical tests as defined by the welding procedure standard. This work must be carried out in a qualified laboratory but the Inspection Body may require witnessing the tests and viewing any radiographs. If the test is successful you or the test body completes the appropriate documents which the test body’s surveyor signs and endorses. What is Welder Performance Qualification Record (WPQR)?
Once the procedure is approved it is necessary to demonstrate that ALL your welders working to it have the required knowledge and skill to put down a clean sound weld. If the welder has satisfactorily completed the procedure test then he is automatically approved but each additional welder must be approved by completing an approval test to an appropriate standard such as ASME Sec IX as follows: Complete a weld test as stated above. The test should simulate production conditions and the welding position should be the position that the production welds are to be made in or one more severe. For maximum positional approval a pipe inclined at 45 degrees (referred to as the 6G position) approves all positions except vertical down.
Test the completed weld in accordance with the relevant standard to ensure that the weld is clean and fully fused. For a butt weld this is normally a visual examination followed by radiography or bend tests. Once the test is completed the necessary forms have to be completed by you or the test body and signed by the test body’s surveyor. Note that any changes that require a new welding procedure (WPS) may also apply to the welder’s approval; refer to the referencing code/ standard for precise details
Acceptance Standards In general, welds must show a neat workman like appearance. The root must be fully fused along the entire length of the weld, the profile of the cap should blend in smoothly with the parent material and the weld should be significantly free from imperfections. Reference should be made to the acceptance standard for precise details.
